Depression:
A Growing Workplace Concern
Depression is increasingly the reason stated by
employees requesting leaves of absence, disability
benefits, job changes and reasonable accommodations.
There [were] nearly twice as many employees stating
depression as their primary diagnosis [by
physicians] for 2001 as in 1999.

Six
Sigma Team Dynamics: The Elusive Key to
Project Success
"For
any Six Sigma team leader who has struggled in
managing a dysfunctional team member or
surviving the ‘storming’ phase of team
development, Mr. Eckes offers time-tested,
pragmatic approaches that work! The two chapters
on ‘preventions’ and ‘interventions’
alone are worth the price of any number of
facilitation training sessions by bringing
together the best ideas in one place with
palpable examples. Mr. Eckes’s ‘best
practice’ of summarizing key learnings at the
end of each chapter makes this an easy-to-use
reference tool for the already overworked Six
Sigma professional."

What
Are The Benefits Of A Team Charter?
|
|
Chartering
teams establishes a performance vision and inspires
teamwork principles and practices.
When
new teams are launched or existing teams are retooled
for new work, the Team Charter provides the platform for
communication and accountability.
The
Team Charter:
- Provides
rationale for a team's existence
- Determines
structure
- Identifies
needed skills and expertise
- Explains
functions
- Clarifies
roles and responsibilities
- Identifies
deliverables
- Sets
scope and boundaries
- Establishes
decision-making processes
- Determines
accountabilities
- Plans
for education and development
-
Promotes
quality and ongoing improvement
Teams
that commit to the team chartering process are launched
with minimal confusion and less frustration.
As
a team continues, the charter is its guide and gauge for
success.

At some
time, everyone needs help to meet a goal, overcome an
obstacle or sustain an effort. Coaching can often
offer the kind of support and direction needed.
Successful coaching is the function of:
Counseling ¾Developing
a clear, accurate assessment of the issues and their
causes; Gaining a solid understanding of the
organizational and technical elements involved;
Expressing honest feelings about what is happening;
Changing perspectives; Accepting accountability;
Achieving greater self-awareness and self-sufficiency.
Mentoring—Gaining
control of personal career development; Building a
strong network of work and professional relationships;
Dedication to the organization's direction; Competency
in dealing with company politics; Understanding what is
acceptable and unacceptable behavior.
Tutoring—Committing
to self-directed learning; Improving work competencies.
Confronting—Identifying
performance problems; Understanding performance
expectations; Taking on challenges; Committing to change
and continuous improvement.
Positive
Change—Improving
performance; Improving working relationships; Creating
mutual responsibility; Developing respect; Getting
desired results; Embracing change; Acquiring discipline.
Directed Dialogue —Conversations that follow a path to
the goal. |
|
When
people are motivated from the inside out they often get
things done against the odds. Intrinsic motivation
is a powerful force.
Four intrinsic rewards have been identified that
generate motivation:
|
Meaningfulness¾Having
opportunities for purposeful work
|
|
Choice¾Input
in selecting what you do and how you do it
|
|
Competence¾Skillfully
executing tasks and achieving goals
|
|
Progress¾Delivering
desired work outcome |
Managers
who create the opportunities for these rewards should
expect to see improved performance.
